Youth at Council
The journey towards General Council has already begun for Youth Forum participants!
There are three phases of GC42 Youth Forum this year:
Each of the 13 Conferences were invited to send five youth to attend the Youth Forum Winter Retreat, which met February 13-16, 2015 at Five Oaks Retreat Centre, Paris Ontario. The youth engaged in experiential learning activities to become more aware of the current structures of the church, how decisions are made by General Council and the work coming to the 42nd General Council, especially the report of the Comprehensive Review Task Group. The youth also discerned their roles following the retreat.
One youth from each conference will engage in a summer pilgrimage to GC42. Three youth (including the pilgrim) will attend General Council 42 in Corner Brook, NL either as commissioners or Youth Forum delegates (voice but no vote on the floor). Two youth will act as Pilgrim Partners, developing local pilgrimages and making connections with the Pilgrims as they travel from Conference to Conference.
During the summer of 2015, 13 youth commissioners plus 2 young adult leaders will be employed by General Council, in partnership with the GO Project, to pilgrimage across the country. As they journey they will listen to the dreams and needs of young people, visit sites and people that will help to inform them of issues coming before the General Council, and confer about the recommendations of the Comprehensive Review Task Group. They will listen deeply and consider wisely as they engage with Spirit and the church.
The 42nd General Council
It is hoped that at least 39 youth will attend the 42nd General Council (3 from each Conference). They are:
- the 13 youth elected as commissioners who took part in the summer pilgrimage;
- the 26 youth chosen as Commissioners/Youth Forum Delegates. Ideally they will be elected by their conferences as a commissioner but if that is not the case they will attend to share their wisdom with voice and no vote;
